Parkinson's Q & A

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder that affects your nervous system and areas of the body controlled by nerves. Tremors (involuntary body shaking) are common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. These and other symptoms often begin slowly and may progress over time when not addressed.

The Mindful TMS Neurocare Centers experts are highly skilled in using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to reduce bothersome symptoms.

What symptoms can Parkinson’s disease cause?

Parkinson’s disease can cause the following symptoms:

  • Tremors
  • Stiffness
  • Slowed body movements
  • Rigid muscles
  • Impaired balance and posture
  • Loss of automatic movements
  • Changes in your ability to write
  • Speech changes
  • Little or no facial expressions
  • Lack of arm movements when you walk
  • Soft or slurred speech

In the early stages of Parkinson's disease, you might not notice any symptoms. As the disease progresses, however, symptoms may begin on one side of your body and remain more severe on that side — even after symptoms progress to the other side of your body.

While there’s no cure for the disease, treatment may slow Parkinson’s disease progression or lessen debilitating symptoms.

What may increase my risk of Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease occurs when neurons (nerve cells) in your brain gradually break down. Loss of neurons that produce dopamine (a chemical messenger in your brain) can decrease dopamine and cause irregular brain activity.

Risk factors include genetic changes, family history of Parkinson’s disease, older age, and exposure to toxins. Men are more likely than women to have the condition.

When not treated, complications associated with Parkinson’s disease might include cognitive issues, depression, swallowing challenges, anxiety, and chewing or eating problems. Pain, fatigue, bladder issues, constipation, sleep disorders, and sexual dysfunction are other potential complications.

How can TMS help with Parkinson’s disease?

Treatment for Parkinson’s disease and its complications vary from person to person. You might be a candidate for medications, lifestyle changes, therapy, or an MRI-guided focused ultrasound.

Mindful TMS Neurocare Centers specializes in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which emits magnetic energy into targeted cells within your brain to alter its activity and reduce unpleasant symptoms.

TMS therapy isn’t painful, though you might hear tapping or clicking sounds during treatment, which often lasts about 20-40 minutes per session. Multiple TMS treatments during the course of a month or two offer the most benefits.
